Talk about the experience of a lifetime. Our #Gr8SA team (eight employees from South African Airways Vacations traveling in South Africa) had an incredibly moving experience – our first safari. A couple of team members have been on safari before, but for most of us it was a brand new, thrilling and emotional experience.
We flew from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth and for the first time on our trip, split our team into two. We took separate transfers (approximately an hour each) with four of us at Shamwari Game Reserve staying at Sarilli Lodge. The other four went to Settlers Drift at Kariega Game Reserve. On night number two we all met at the Homestead in Kariega.
Just like anyone else, we were excited at the prospect of seeing Africa’s “Big Five,” the African elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo. However, every animal we saw elicited incredible excitement – giraffes, ostrich, zebra, impala, varieties of boks and tons of birds. We also got to see littler creatures, like a millipede, a leopard tortoise and lots of spiders. There were honest-to-goodness tears of delight.
The guides were exceptional – so much information available top of mind can only come from people who are truly passionate about what they do. In fact, everyone we encountered at the lodges was friendly, professional and seemed genuinely happy to see us and share the wonder of their home with us. The kind of hospitality we experienced at the game lodges made us feel like we were saying goodbye to our dear friends who we’d like to visit longer. But we had a flight to catch in Port Elizabeth, so we bid a fond farewell to our new friends and headed to the next leg of our journey.
Up next, we travel to KwaZulu-Natal’s capital city of Durban.
